Headed off at eleven after completing a few domestic chores, once more off to the shuttle bus and into town. Todays objective was to visit Portovenetre a beautiful seaside town one stop from La Spezia but not accessible by train but only ferry, bus or car. So it was onto the local bus for the 25 minute trip to the center of this town.
Its main features are the church on a rocky outcrop and the imposing castle on the hill ( both seen before in pics taken from the ferry days earlier)
It also has a lovely sea front with many restaurants fronting the water, there's also the usual tourist trinket shops and a sprinkling of nice hotels and I guess airbnb's
The harbor area constantly sees ferry's come and go bringing new visitors and taking others to the near by 5 other coastal hamlets
We had a very nice spaghetti seafood dish each, just the right size for us ....we enjoyed it with 500ml of the house white ..all good
Now I'm not at all religious but the visit to this imposing little church dedicated to a large extent to the seafaring folk of the town who had lost their lives to the sea fishing in the past and even today as many continue in the same trade...but I digress ..It seemed a very good place to reflect on the lives of my deceased dad 2013, and brother Alan in 2016, and the struggle a very old friend of mine from Castlemaine is currently having on his final life journey ..Bruce BAUD. May they all rest peacefully.
