Olten as it turned out is only a place where idiots would spend 3 days but 3 days we did!! The old town had some interesting buildings but the old town area can be seen in 1.5 hours. We found some old hotels to enjoy a meal and a drink.
Day 2 took us on a side trip to Bern, now that is an interesting place and only 1 hour by train from Olten. The old town is medieval in character with the usual assortment of churches,
The Swiss style of church is much more austere than those of Italy, Greece or Germany, they are much darker in colour and use more timber.
Bern has a number of significant squares and fountains..one sad feature is the bear park...only 3 bears in the entire country left ( we think)
Day 3 was another short train trip to Neuchatel on a large lake, covered in mist and cloud when we arrived but on leaving the lake and town revealed their charm.
It was a down hill walk of some 800mt from station to the town but worth it.
On the way back to the station we discovered a more gentle route.
Our BnB host was great making shore all was to our satisfaction and lamenting that the weather bar one day had not need kind to us.... funny thing is each day out of OLTEN was either sunny or at least fine and reasonably warm
PIC.....
Bern first
Then Neuchatel.. see boat on lake
